Five years had passed since my daughter and son-in-law died in a car accident, and I was finally starting to piece my life back together. To help myself heal, I decided to take a much-needed vacation. As I stood at the hotel’s front desk, taking in the sleek, modern design, I felt a flicker of excitement for the first time in years. But as I glanced around the lobby, I noticed a couple standing near the gift shop. I froze. It was my daughter, Pamela, and my son-in-law, Frank. I couldn’t believe my eyes. They began to head for the exit, and I instinctively ran after them. My legs felt like jelly, but I managed to shout, “Pamela!” The girl turned, and I saw her face. It was Pamela, and she went pale the moment she saw me.
