ST, The Risks of Ignoring Fungal Infections

Toenail fungus, or onychomycosis, may seem like a minor issue, but ignoring it can lead to significant health consequences. Dr. Peter Joseph, a podiatrist, warns that untreated toenail fungus can cause foot discomfort, misshapen nails, and even athlete’s foot. The warm, moist environment within shoes provides an ideal breeding ground for the fungus to spread. Moreover, if left untreated, toenail fungus can lead to severe infections, especially in individuals with compromised immune systems, potentially resulting in cellulitis, a serious bacterial skin condition. Onycholysis, where the toenail separates from the nail bed, is another potential complication. Dr. Joseph emphasizes the importance of seeking medical care for toenail fungal infections to prevent complications. Treatment options include oral or topical antifungal medicines, and early diagnosis and intervention can help avoid discomfort and maintain healthy feet.
